In early 2018 Startup and Innovation Tablelands (ST) with the support of Atherton Tableland Chamber of Commerce( ATCC) held a truly successful event: The Tablelands Purpose Summit for Business.
Presented was a unique practice for purpose hunting for a business or for an individual. Over 50 attended, astounding both ST and ATCC. The reaction and feedback was so overwhelmingly positive that a business mastermind group was decided upon on the spot!
So what is a business mastermind? In general, it is a group of business owners or startup entrepreneurs who meet regularly to network, give mutual feedback, exchange tricks and tips, and set up swap relationships for mutual benefit or match up paid providers with other businesses in need of known and trustworthy partners.
What’s different about our business mastermind, now dubbed Connection with Direction(CwD)? We have, in deep discussion and consensus, decided collaboratively that our group will continue to do practices/exercises which develop deep trust and unfold an atmosphere where members feel free to express their blocks to evolving better businesses whether through pragmatic reasons or through emotional resistance.
Has this worked? A resounding YES is the answer. The group has met with up to 17 members once monthly since inception. Enthusiasm is growing rather than waning. It is a self organising group which has run for 6 months without any financial support or outside help. It is self-organising and stresses collaborative leadership whereby facilitation roles in practices is shared and leadership roles rotate as appropriate and agreed upon by consensus.
The CwD mastermind remains an open group at the moment. Eventually we foresee closing this group as it will become increasingly difficult to integrate new members as the group coalesces and goes through a process of evolution together.
It is hoped that new mastermind groups can be spun off from this group. This will increase the social and economic benefits and will certainly contribute to the original members’ increase in capacity as they will be called upon to help new groups with set up and development.
In short, CwD is a positive addition to small businesses in TRC. It certainly is a unique group in our area and shows leadership even in an Australia wide perspective. We hope to inspire you to enquire about our processes and to test out our claims by joining in!
